This is one of the most iconic wines in Rioja – fresh, spicy, tobacco, berries, dark fruit, allspice, melllow oak. Made with Garnacha & Graciano grapes, & 24 months in oak – this wine scored 93 in the Parker guide. A real treat!!

25 months in new American oak & a further 20 months aged in the bottle has delivered an elegant wine with a complex nose of cedar wood, ground coffee & cassis. It has an intensely rich mouth feel, full of heavy fruit & a hint of warm spice.

‘The Graveyard’ Shiraz, Brokenwood, Hunter Valley, Australia 2011 £140.00
The graveyard vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown – responsible for this Shiraz that is fast becoming one of Australia’s most iconic wines. Ripe tannins & flavours of dark chocolate, sweet earth & dark cherry.

Ridge Monte Bello, Napa Valley, USA 2008 £160.00 (magnum £320.00)
Layers of black cherry, flowers, graphite & spice are woven together around a core of rich red fruit, juicy tannins & a silky sweet finish. Predominantly Cabernet led, Merlot & Petit Verdot have been added to make what can only be described as a magnificent wine.

Malbec
The best Malbec in the world is grown in Mendoza, Argentina.  The conditions and climate required for the grape to grow are perfect here.  Malbec is without doubt ‘THE’ grape to go with beef, mainly due to its firm tannins & soft, fresh style.  The most highly rated wines come from Mendoza’s high altitude regions of Lujan de Cuyo & the Uco Valley.  These districts are located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains between 800m & 1500m above sea-level.  In 1994 Nicolas Catena Zapata was the first to plant a Malbec vineyard at 1500m.  The jewel in Argentina’s crown, not only is Malbec the perfect match for beef, it also works brilliantly with chocolate – what is there not to like!

A rare balance of velvety power & finesse, this Malbec is deep purple in colour & intense in flavour.  A fantastic unique wine. Has spent 14 months in oak.

Bramare Malbec, Uco Valley, Mendoza 2011 £67.00
Another Paul Hobbs wine, made in high altitude this is rich & velvety with elegant tannins.  Hints of oak(18 months), leather & plum.

Cadus Malbec, ‘Las Tortugas’ Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza 2009 £80.00
This carefully crafted wine is superb – 24 months in new French oak with a further 24 months stored horizontally, it is full bodied with a long rich finish.  This is the high-end wine of Bodegas Nieto Senetiner.

Finca Altamira Malbec, Uco Valley, Mendoza 2010 £90.00
A single vineyard Malbec aged in French oak for 15 months, superb quality – ground pepper, dark cherries & fresh raspberries on the nose.  One of THE best known Malbec producers.
